When imagining a dream holiday, one usually thinks of sun, a bright blue sky, sandy beaches, crystal-clear water and good food.

If an impressive mountain panorama is added, the picture becomes even more perfect. Now, someone pinch me because it's real! Welcome to Nevada and beautiful Lake Tahoe!

Lake Tahoe: Dream Beach and Water Sports

My first stop was Zephyr Cove Resort, a beautiful private resort located directly on Lake Tahoe. At 6,225 feet above sea level, North America's largest alpine lake is one of the most beautiful areas in the American West. Zephyr Cove Resort offers many fun activities, but, of course, you can also simply relax: bathe in the sun, get spoiled in the restaurants or go for an evening drink. I rented a kayak first thing, and it was such fun to float over the huge lake. Furthermore, you can ride motorboats, try parasailing, go horseback riding, play volleyball or simply do nothing and just enjoy the sun. Did I mention that already?

Dream Beach at Sand Harbor

If you like white-sand beaches, you should not miss Sand Harbor. As the name suggests, this place is known for its fine sand. Located on a beautiful bay location in the massive Lake Tahoe State Park, it offers the most spectacular panoramic views. In addition, this location is popular for snorkelling and diving. If you are looking for peace and quiet, it’s best to come early. I visited in the morning hours as the water calmly glittered in the sun. I sat on a rock, took a deep breath and felt like the world belonged only to me.

Western History and ‘Bonanza’

The journey continued with a visit to Virginia City, where the famous television series "Bonanza" was filmed. As soon as you set foot on the unique restored wooden sidewalks, you will find yourself transported back in time. In 1859, large silver deposits were mined here, and almost overnight, this city became the richest in Nevada. Today, Virginia City is a historical landmark.

Saloons & Casinos in Virginia City

Toward the early evening I noticed many locals, one by one, walking to the end of the street, so I followed them until they disappeared inside the Red Dog Saloon! I hesitated to enter, but was immediately greeted warmly. The staff suggested that I try their homemade pizza and – it was great! There was a band playing, and the locals, partly dressed in period costumes, were drinking beer or cocktails at the rustic wooden bar. This classic venue transported me completely back in time. Someone asked me to dance, then another one and another one. I danced, laughed and had so much fun that I didn’t want my incredible evening to come to an end. Encore!

If you want to enjoy more of Nevada’s nightlife, I also suggest you drive to the Stateline between Nevada and California. Here you can try your luck gambling at one of the many casinos the South Shore has to offer.

I will definitely return to Nevada to cash in on my next promised dance at the Red Dog Saloon. Are you coming with me?
