When his sister didn’t want a surfboard she had won in a competition, Keanu Asing got his chance to start surfing.

However, it wasn’t until his father covered up his sister’s Little Mermaid sticker that Asing agreed to take it out in the water. After that first turn he was hooked. From that moment, no matter where he was, his mind would always be in the water.

Living the Dream

His furious passion, along with the tireless support of his mother and father, kept him working hard at his dream. When he was 12, his father bought him a big map of the world, so that he could mark all the places he was going to go surf. That map still hangs in his room.

Today, Asing, a native of ‘Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, is a professional surfer. He competes in the World Surf League, having earned himself a spot among the top 34 surfers in the world. In 2015 alone he surfed in Australia, Brazil, Tahiti, Fiji, California, South Africa, Portugal and France.

Despite surfing around the world, Asing believes that the best water and culture can only be found in Oahu. The spirit of aloha — meaning hello, goodbye, love, affection, peace, respect, mercy and goodwill towards others and the environment –– is what he feels most connected to, and what he takes with him wherever he goes. Hawaii, the Aloha State, will always be the place he calls home.
