Gospel-Rock Musician and Austin native, Dr. Joe, wants you to “Get Weird” in his Texas town.

Between the copious food trucks, the breathtaking outdoors, live music and oddity boutiques, a day in the life spent in Austin does not disappoint. “We are an inclusive culture, so get weird with us!”, Dr. Joe insists. “The only thing we ask is that you keep it positive.”

Where to stay

Out-of-towners in need of lodging should look into booking a room at The Driskill--a “historic and fancy spot in the heart of downtown.” A Romanesque-style landmark built in 1886, The Driskill is the oldest operating hotel in Austin.

Where to start your day

Begin your day at the Lamar St. Pedestrian Bridge overlooking Lady Bird Lake. “One side is a beautiful Texas sunrise over the lake and downtown, while the other is sprawling Westlake Hills”, the singer claims.

Where to fill up on eggs

For breakfast, chow down on Migas Tacos from Veracruz All Natural Taco Truck at Radio Coffee in the South Lamar area bedecked in kitschy wood paneling. Take a cue from Dr. Joe: “You’ve got to hit up a food truck or three while you’re in Austin, simply because there are so many unique restaurants on wheels to choose from.”

Or, hold out for a BBQ lunch

Mouthwatering barbequed sausage and brisket for al fresco lunch at Micklethwait Craft Meats between Foster Heights and Central East. Texas does their BBQ with slow smoked dry rubs, no sauce, and it’s excellent.

Where to get in touch with nature

Burn those brisket calories and cool off with a swim at Barton Springs, “A natural outdoor swimming hole that’s 70 degrees year round,” Dr. Joe says. The Springs are located in the very lush Zilker Park, where the green outdoors against a backdrop of city life thrive together in perfect harmony.

Where to hear the music

Barbarella is a hopping downtown music venue with diverse crowds, lively tunes and multiple dance floors--”great for meeting new people,” the singer says, “as well as C-Boys Rock n’ Roll.” The latter is a bi-level downtown club that offers a cozy Japanese-American bar tucked away upstairs.

End the day on a high note

“Hit up gorgeous Clark’s Oyster Bar for dinner and drinks in West Austin, before taking in a late night music show at the Skylark Lounge.” Located south of Mueller Lake Park, Skylark is a fun and funky beer and wine bar in a dive setting.
